We drove across the desert, we forded a river, and we sang our little lungs out. [livejournal.com profile] cows_might_fly (Eva), [livejournal.com profile] _audhumla_ (Sarah), [livejournal.com profile] rin_tin_tin_ (Rin/Molly/Meredith/whatever), her cousin Kat, and I, made it after being on the road for eight days.

Pictures coming later, when I sort through all 890 of the buggers and discard the ones that I really really really did not need to take. Then, in a few days time, Eva and I fly off to Sri Lanka for three weeks... and let me just say, I feel like we're the luckiest people in the world right now!

So, did I miss anything?

WOO HOO!!!!

Rest in peace, Spacebat

You were probably the very first bat to ever travel outside Earth's atmosphere. At least you'll go down in history for that.

Cut for posterity )

************************

I also found out today that a guy whose place we stayed at when we were in Amsterdam back in 2007 died last month.

Jan Smid was an original 60s child, full of optimism and love for people.

He helped organise the Magical Mystery Tour (that's obviously him in the picture), which took people with disabilities on day trips around Holland in a big coach, presumably while piping in happy Beatles music. I wonder if it's still operating. I really hope it is, as he was justifiably proud of it.

Rest in peace, you mad Lennon fan you. I was hoping we'd meet you again one day. If I believed in an afterlife...

Our engagement party (and Eva's 28th) was themed: Retro. 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s.

I wonder which decade I wish I had been a part of...

You know what's even more tragic? I really wish I could dress like this all the time...

I'm certainly keeping the aviators. And, for a while at least, the facial hair.

These photos were taken by a friend who's not on LJ - on her Facebook she alluded to the fact that I looked like I belonged in the cast of Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities. She suggested that I bore a striking resemblance to cocaine lords of that era.

My kingdom for a time machine.

Tonight, [livejournal.com profile] vivienne_aster and I drove down to Williamstown beach to meet [livejournal.com profile] mstakenidentity, [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo, [livejournal.com profile] _audhumla_ and [livejournal.com profile] ragedc between the Siren Cafe and the kiosk. We had fish n' chips, and watched the sun set:

Then everyone except me and [livejournal.com profile] _audhumla went swimming. Why? Because they're crazy bastards and the two of us are not. Yes, it's summer, but it's Melbourne summer - therefore the water is bloody freezing. And I could tell how freezing it was as I watched [livejournal.com profile] ragedc shudder involuntarily as the waterline reached his goolies, even as far away as I was. Of course, we were smug until the sun dipped below the horizon and the damned wind came from out of nowhere and just about chilled us to the goddamn bone...so we all got out of there as fast as we could and went back to the main street. Here, we were joined by [livejournal.com profile] fnoo, and we went to the most excellent créperie and had awesome crépes (MINE WAS ON FIRE! ON! FUCKING! FIRE!!!! How splendiferous...).

'Twas a goodly evening.

And here are some random photos from my phone and the camera...mostly of Teh Cute )

Ok, that's enough of that. Time to sleep.

Apropos [livejournal.com profile] mstakenidentity's post, this is what we (well, me and a couple of others - everyone else SUCKED! ;) ) sang (or bellowed) from the balcony in lieu of "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

Blake rules.

Happy New Year, boys and boyettes.

The Fringe

I can't believe I'd never seen anything at the Fringe Festival before this year.

So far we've seen Lysistrata, which has many of our lovely friends in it (and Eva did the costumes!) and it's had some really good press (yeah, I know guys, the pimpage has come way too late...sorry...). In fact, we're seeing it three times, because it rocks. :D

And tonight we saw Circus Trick Tease, which was utterly goddamned amazing. All three of these guys (well, two guys and a girl) are consummate professionals - their acrobatic abilities are amazing, they keep in character even while performing death-defying balancing acts (there's a story, albeit a very silly one!), and they're hilarious. If you have a chance to see them (i.e. if you're a Melburnian or are in Melbourne and have a spare $18), do so. If only for the balancing act which will have you holding the top of your head in awe and phantom pain (trust me, you'll know it when you see it). And here are some pics that someone else took.

Pimpage done.

Killing The Cabinet

And no, I don't think I'll be flocking this one. ;)

Most classic line: "Wait! It's not dead enough!"
clappamungus: (The Great Storkening of 2006!)
I did not go into the lab. I plan to keep it that way until tomorrow.

On Saturday I helped in the moving of the belongings of [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo and [livejournal.com profile] mstakenidentity from their old abode to their new one.

And, we finally got to do something that we had been putting off for while - we (I, [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo, [livejournal.com profile] ragedc and [livejournal.com profile] _audhumla_) smashed a piece of the past to shit with a sledgehammer and a crowbar. It was extremely satisfying. Post pics soon, Seamus and Daniel!

This morning was the 4th birthday celebration of Mischa (Eva's nephew) - and I'm becoming more enamoured of the kid. As much as I almost hate to admit it - he's a lovely kid.

Then, I walked the dog in the park. I can't imagine life without her now.

And now, we're going to the city to indulge in our capitalistic urges. Mwah.

Love, friends, family, and not too many problems on the horizon. Not to mention that the millstone around my neck has been well and truly removed.

Life's good. :D

Wow. A completely non-rant post...

Yes, I think a lot of my photos now will be puppy based. Yes, I know I'm obsessed.

SHAYNE

"How old are you again, Andy? Twenty-five? Half a century?"

Crap....
clappamungus: (Dream Theater)
* The new Dream Theater album Systematic Chaos = almost 80 minutes of head-banging, awe-inspiring proggy metal ecstasy. Unfortunately, I am listening through crappy earphones with Thesis Editing of No, Really, GAAAAAH!!!!TM in front of me, so my "enjoyment" of both is being somewhat compromised ("Enjoyment" being the operative term for the thesis).

* The iTunes equalizer sucks dogs' balls. Seriously. The preamp settings are either too loud and distorted or just not freaking loud enough. And don't even get me started on the presets. Obviously designed by someone with no idea about how music is supposed to sound.

* [livejournal.com profile] rin_tin_tin_ - sorry I didn't reply to your SMS. No, not tonight. In fact, probably not until we come back from OS, to be frank with you!

That is all.

Grmp.

I just got knocked back from the cushiest job ever. There was a position for a tutor to teach 2nd year Microbiology (and possibly 2nd year Immunology, piss easy), to the nuffers over at the Institute of Land and Food Resources. ie. Ag students. I was told by my supervisor that they were desperate and that they would probably even pay me an extra hour for preparation if I asked, they were so desperate.

But no. I call up and the positions have been filled. Even though I wasn't exactly orgasming in my underwear over the prospects of teaching Ag nuffers, I still find it depressing.

Anyway, at least Eva and I had a good time last night at Nick and Sarah's new place, with [livejournal.com profile] mstakenidentity and Long-haired Lisa (what the hell is her last name, anyway?), which is what we needed quite badly. It's been a stressful couple of weeks.

....

I still can't believe ILFR knocked me back...those bastards couldn't organise a root in a brothel full of nymphomaniacs...
