Shit.
No one told me it was Student Union elections. That meant I had to stealthily slide past the rabid packs of pamphlet-waving Epsilons that hung around every single entry point of the Student Union like vultures. Just to get my lunch. There should be a law permitting carrying and use of flame-throwers during Student Union election week.
Anyway, I managed to avoid the fuckwitts on both sides of the political spectrum. I spied two of the Liberal wankers making their burly way through the lunchtime crowds and resisted the urge to go up to them and trip them up.
As I walked back to the lab, I saw one hapless girl in a Left Focus (or whatever the hell they're calling themselves nowadays) uniform, just outside the Commerce building, waving dreaded pamphlets! I sidled to the right, eyes straight ahead. And so she ignored me, seeing how I wasn't interested in the slightest. And then I heard her ask of another poor sap passing her way - "Do you support the ending of the occupation of Iraq?"
With the greatest difficulty I resisted the urge to yell out, "WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY HAS IRAQ TO DO WITH THE MELBOURNE UNI STUDENT UNION, YOU FUCKING IDIOT????"
I disagree with Voluntary Student Unionism. But, I DO NOT want my Services and Amenities fee being used to fund a fucking protest march. I thought the whole point of Student Office Bearers was to work FOR STUDENTS. Not for any popular left-wing cause that pops its head up. And yes, I consider myself fairly left-wing. But it should not be the function of a Student Union to attempt to save the world. Nor is it to be turned into a business (thank-you very much, Mr Darren Ray and Scott Crawford. I hope you both choke on your own vomit). Why, why, WHY can't Officer Bearer-aspirants of both sides figure this out???
And that's all I have to say on that subject.

Date: 2005-10-24 07:32 am (UTC)I've known a few middle-managers, real tough right-wing buggers, who used to chant anti-war slogans and were involved in the various Socialist University parties three decades ago.
